Manaslu Circuit Trek Facts

The Manaslu Circuit Trek lasts 9-16 days and covers 177 km of moderate to challenging terrain. You begin at Machha Khola (890m) or Aarughat and finish at Besisahar. The best times to trek are March-May and September-November. Along the route, accommodations include tea houses, guesthouses, and lodges. You must obtain special permits such as the Restricted Area Permit, MCAP, and ACAP. The main route passes through Soti Khola, Machha Khola, Jagat, Deng, Namrung, and Samagaon. A rest day in Samagaon helps you acclimatize. The journey continues through Samdo, Dharamsala/Larkya Phedi, Bhimthang, Tilije, and Chamje before ending at Besisahar. This trek combines breathtaking landscapes with cultural encounters, offering an unforgettable experience.

Trip Introduction

If you are looking for one of Nepal’s best trekking trails, the Manaslu Circuit Trek (11 days) should be on your list. This trek takes you through the Manaslu Conservation Area, leading to a breathtaking view of the world’s eighth-highest mountain, Manaslu. The trek starts at Soti Khola and ends at Dharapani after crossing the Larke La Pass. You can extend your adventure by continuing onto the Annapurna Circuit Trek, which lasts 20-22 days and includes an extra side trek to the Tsum Valley.

Unlike the crowded Everest Base Camp Trek, the Manaslu Circuit offers a more peaceful and culturally rich experience. Although it is remote and physically demanding, trekkers enjoy both scenic upliftment and cultural enrichment on this trail.

Trekking Highlights and Challenges

As you trek higher, you will cross lush green lowlands decorated with rice and millet terraces. Then, the trail leads you through the magnificent gorges of the Budi Gandaki River, known for its sparkling turquoise waters and breathtaking waterfalls.

The suspension bridges on the Manaslu Trek are long and high, unmatched in Nepal. However, the annual monsoon rains sometimes wash away smaller bridges, forcing trekkers to cross using semi-submerged rocks.

You must be in good physical shape for this mesmerizing trek. Heading north, you reach the snow-capped Larke La Pass, near the Tibetan border. The pass stands at an impressive 5,167 meters (16,952 feet) and is often covered with snow and ice. Most trekkers begin the ascent at 3 am to reach the top before strong winds pick up mid-morning. For the descent, using micro crampons is highly advisable.

From the pass, the view looking back is stunning, but the most incredible sight awaits as you walk west along a corridor. You will see a great glacial cirque formed by the summits of Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal, Nemjung, Gyaji Kang, and Kang Guru, with Annapurna II towering in the background.

Booking and Cost

To make your trek more comfortable, you can book transport to the starting point and hire a guide. The cost of the Manaslu Trek depends on the number of days and services you include. If you want a short Manaslu Trek, you can do it on a budget. However, be sure to obtain all necessary permits before starting your journey.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek stands out as a remarkable trekking destination in Nepal. It offers a unique experience that differs from the popular Everest Base Camp Trek. The route is secluded and physically demanding, but it rewards trekkers with cultural immersion and breathtaking natural vistas. With proper preparation and an adventurous spirit, you will have an unforgettable journey through the Manaslu Conservation Area.

Manaslu Trek Permits & Regulations

Trekking in the Manaslu region requires special permits issued by the Nepal Tourism Board. You must obtain these permits through a registered trekking agency. Because the Manaslu region is a restricted area, foreign trekkers must travel in groups of two or more and have a licensed guide at all times. Trekkers must follow the designated trekking route and camp only in approved areas. Respect for local culture and traditions is essential, and damaging the natural environment is prohibited. These regulations keep trekkers safe and help protect the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

Weather, Temperature & Seasons

The Manaslu Circuit Trek 11 Day lies in west-central Nepal and experiences the monsoon season from June to September. During this period, the trail becomes muddy and slippery, making trekking difficult.

The best time to trek is from September to November, after the monsoon ends. The weather clears up, and the views become spectacular. Daytime temperatures range between 10-20°C (50-68°F), but nights can be freezing. Spring (March to May) is another good trekking season with mild weather. Because mountain weather changes quickly, always carry warm clothing and gear, especially for cold nights.

Accommodation & Meals

During the Manaslu Circuit Trek 11 day, you will stay mainly in teahouses or lodges. These are locally owned and offer basic accommodation and food. Most have shared bathrooms and a common dining area.

Rooms are simple, usually with twin beds, blankets, and pillows. Some teahouses have private rooms, but they are limited. Electricity runs only for a few hours in the evening, so bring a headlamp or flashlight.

Meals mainly include Nepali and Tibetan dishes such as Dal Bhat, Gurung bread, momos, and various curries. Vegetarian options are available. Food is hearty and designed to fuel your trek. Some teahouses offer Western dishes like pasta, pizza, and sandwiches. Bring snacks such as energy bars or nuts, as some trail sections are long with no teahouses nearby.

Most teahouses do not accept credit cards, so carry enough cash for your trek.

Physical Condition & Experience

The Manaslu Round Trek is moderate to challenging, with steep ascents and descents and high-altitude passes. Trekkers should have good physical fitness and stamina.

Having prior hiking or trekking experience helps, as some trail parts are rough and uneven. Daily walks can be several hours, reaching altitudes up to 5,160 meters (16,924 feet) at Larkya La Pass. Prepare well both physically and mentally.

Proper acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness. An extra acclimatization day in Samdo Village is recommended. Drink plenty of water and take it easy during the first days.

Consult your doctor if you have any medical conditions before starting the trek.

We usually stop for a light lunch at a teahouse along the route. By early afternoon, we reach Larke Phedi, a small settlement with very basic lodges built mainly for trekkers. The air is thinner here, so we rest, hydrate, and prepare for tomorrow’s long and challenging trek over the Larke La Pass. Overnight at Larke Phedi.
