Mountain Sickness(AMS)

There is always the same common question when you are going for adventure to the high Himalayas that How to prevent mountain sickness so mainly High altitude mountain sickness is due to a rapid ascent and descent in the high Himalaya region. especially 4800 to 11000 ft or more than that you may get high altitude sickness. the oxygen level needs to be balanced and needs to drink a lot somehow if not you may get the sickness.

mainly there are 3 types of altitude sickness Acute altitude sickness (MILD), Mountain sickness (AMS), and High altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE)

The cause of altitude mountain sickness is the decreasing of Oxygen level in your body. there are a few categorized for sickness:

Early Mountain Sickness symptoms:
1.  A headache,
2. Fatigue,
3. Insomnia.

so, when you have those early symptoms you should consult with friends and to your guide, if they suggest you to go to the nearest primary hospital you should go because mountain sickness may kill the human easily.

The other Major Symptoms are:

  • Dizziness, can’t walk
  • Numbness to the tip of finger or weakness
  • Changes in vision
  • Difficulty with balance
  • Eye, ear, or facial pain
  • Cold symptoms at your body
  • Fever and crackling sound in lungs
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Nausea with or without vomiting,
  • A dry cough, pink frothy
  • Fast heartbeat

Here are the important tips to prevent Altitude Sickness:

1. Descend to Lower Altitude

For mild acute mountain sickness, the person should stay at the same altitude to see if his or her body adjusts or not at list few hours than If symptoms don’t get better in 24 to 48 hours or if they get worse, the person should go down to a lower altitude and seek immediate medical care.

For severe symptoms, you should recently go down 600 m to 1,000 m with as little exertion as possible and also try to Keep going down until symptoms go away and drink warm water as much as possible to increase the oxygen level. even after crossing those low altitudes if you are still feeling the same Get medication immediately otherwise you may die.

2. Treatment Symptoms:

Give oxygen for a few hours, if available(generally, each settlement has oxygen.
Keep him/her warm and give him/her rest inside the warm dining where people can take care,
Give plenty of liquids, water, and Garlic soup, it helps a lot.
Give acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Diamax for a headache.

3. See a Health Care Provider as soon as possible

If you have mild symptoms and go after descending, you just rest and see how you go when you decide with friends and guide but if you have severe symptoms, you should immediately meet a health provider.
