Tilicho Lake & Thorong La Pass Trek – An Unforgettable Himalayan Adventure

In October 2025, my friend Rupesh and I completed the incredible Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass Trek, and it remains one of the most rewarding adventures we’ve ever experienced. From the breathtaking mountain scenery to the warm hospitality of the local people, every day brought new memories and unforgettable views.

Tilicho Lake, one of the world’s highest lakes, was absolutely stunning. The crystal-clear turquoise water surrounded by towering snow-covered peaks created a peaceful and magical atmosphere that made every step of the journey worthwhile.

Crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters) was the highlight of the trek. It was physically demanding, but reaching the summit filled us with an incredible sense of achievement. The panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges were simply spectacular.

The trail offered a perfect mix of beautiful forests, alpine landscapes, charming villages, suspension bridges, and dramatic mountain scenery. The teahouses were comfortable, the food was satisfying, and the local people were friendly, welcoming, and supportive throughout the journey.

Proper acclimatization, careful planning, and maintaining a steady pace made the trek enjoyable and safe. We highly recommend carrying warm clothing, staying hydrated, and respecting the mountain environment.

We are grateful to everyone who helped make this journey so memorable. Completing this trek together was a proud achievement and an experience that we will treasure forever.

If you’re looking for a challenging yet incredibly rewarding Himalayan adventure, the Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass Trek should definitely be on your bucket list. It offers stunning landscapes, unforgettable experiences, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Highly Recommended!

Genaral Trip InfoInfos

Location of Tilicho Lake

Tilicho Lake is found in the Annapurna massif, inside the Manang district of Nepal. It lies high up in the mountains, surrounded by towering snowy peaks. The lake sits above the tree line, making it a unique and breathtaking place.

Length of the Tilicho Lake Trek

This trek usually takes between 5 and 7 days to complete, depending on your speed and exact route. The trek covers a mix of easy and challenging paths, with some long hiking days, especially when going up to the lake.

Best time to do the Tilicho Lake Trek

The best seasons for this trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is mostly clear, the skies are blue, and the trail conditions are good. These seasons are also the safest for avoiding heavy rain or snow.

Difficulty level of the Tilicho Lake Trek

The trek is considered moderately hard to challenging. You will walk for many hours each day, and the altitude gets very high, which can make breathing harder. A good level of fitness and some trekking experience help a lot to complete the trek comfortably.

Highest point of the trek

The highest point on this trek is Tilicho Lake itself, at 4,919 meters above sea level. This makes it one of the highest alpine lakes on Earth. Trekking at this height requires careful pacing and proper acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness.

Permits required for the Tilicho Lake Trek:

To do the Tilicho Lake Trek, you must have two permits. The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is required to protect the region’s natural beauty. You also need a TIMS (Trekking Information Management System) card, which helps keep trekkers safe by registering their presence.

Tilicho Base Camp to Tilicho Lake distance:

The distance from Tilicho Base Camp to Tilicho Lake is approximately 4.5 to 5.5 kilometers one way.

The hike usually takes about 2.5 to 4 hours to reach the lake and around 2 to 3 hours to return to base camp, depending on weather and walking pace.

The trail from Tilicho Base Camp to Tilicho Lake is steep, rocky, and exposed in several sections. There is also a risk of landslides, especially in narrow parts of the trail. Although the distance is not very long, the high altitude above 4,900 meters makes the trek physically demanding, with cold winds and thin air increasing the difficulty.

Tilicho Lake Trek Teahouse Facilities: What to Expect on the Route

Teahouses on the Tilicho Lake trek are basic but provide essential facilities for trekkers. Rooms are usually simple with twin beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. Heating is limited, and hot showers may cost extra. Electricity and charging points are available in some places but not guaranteed, especially at higher elevations like Tilicho Base Camp.

Meals in tea houses near Tilicho Lake are mostly Nepali and simple international dishes such as dal bhat, noodles, and soups. Food is freshly prepared but options become limited as altitude increases. Clean drinking water is available, often boiled or filtered, but trekkers are advised to carry purification tablets for safety.

What Food Is Available During the Annapurna and Tilicho Trek?

During the Annapurna and Tilicho trekking routes, food is easily available in teahouses and lodges along the trail. The most common meal is Dal Bhat, which provides strong energy and is often refillable. Other options include noodles, momos, thukpa, pasta, potatoes, and eggs, all prepared in simple trekking-style kitchens to support long hiking days.

Breakfast usually includes porridge, pancakes, and Tibetan bread, giving trekkers enough energy for the morning walk. At higher altitudes, food choices become more limited, but still filling and warm. Overall, the food is basic yet reliable, designed to keep trekkers strong and comfortable in the mountains.

Starting Point for the Tilicho Lake Trek:

The Tilicho Lake Trek commonly starts from Manang, especially when trekkers choose to shorten the route by driving from Kathmandu. The journey begins with a long road trip from Kathmandu to Besisahar, followed by a rugged jeep drive through the Marsyangdi Valley passing villages like Dharapani, Chame, and Pisang before finally reaching Manang (3,540m). This drive can take 2–3 days depending on road conditions.

From Manang, the actual trekking route toward Tilicho Lake begins. Trekkers hike toward Khangsar, Shree Kharka, and Tilicho Base Camp before reaching the final destination, Tilicho Lake (4,919m). Starting from Manang helps with acclimatization and reduces trekking days while still following the scenic Annapurna Circuit trail.

Is there mobile phone and internet coverage on the Tilicho Lake Trek?

Mobile phone and internet coverage on the Tilicho Lake Trek is limited and unreliable, especially as you go higher toward Tilicho Base Camp and the lake area. In lower sections like Besisahar, Chame, and parts of Manang, you may get decent signals from Nepalese networks such as NTC and Ncell, but the connection often becomes weak or intermittent.

Above Manang, especially after Khangsar and Siri Kharka, coverage is very poor or completely unavailable. Some teahouses may offer paid Wi-Fi, but it is usually slow and unstable. Trekkers should not depend on constant connectivity and instead prepare for offline navigation and communication.

How do you charge electronic devices during the Tilicho Lake Trek?

Charging electronic devices on the Tilicho Lake Trek is possible but limited. Most teahouses along the route offer charging facilities, usually powered by solar or small generators. You can charge phones, cameras, and power banks in places like Manang and lower villages, but availability decreases as you go higher.

Higher up near Tilicho Base Camp, charging may cost extra and can be unreliable due to weak power supply. It is strongly recommended to carry a power bank or solar charger and conserve battery by switching to airplane mode when not in use.

How does the Tilicho Lake Trek combine with the Annapurna Circuit?

The Tilicho Lake Trek usually starts as part of the Annapurna Circuit route, beginning from Besisahar and gradually moving up through Chame and Pisang toward Manang. From Manang, trekkers take a detour west into the remote valley leading to Tilicho Base Camp and Tilicho Lake (4,919m), before rejoining the main circuit trail toward Yak Kharka and Thorong La Pass.

This combination is considered one of the most rewarding Himalayan journeys because it blends the classic Annapurna landscapes with the wild isolation of Tilicho Lake. You experience both cultural village life and extreme alpine terrain in a single trek, making it a powerful high-altitude adventure loop with unmatched scenery and variety.

What are the weather conditions during the Tilicho Lake Trek?

The Tilicho Lake Trek experiences highly varied weather due to its extreme altitude range. Lower sections like Besisahar and Manang are generally mild in daytime but cool at night. As you ascend above 4,000m, temperatures drop sharply, with cold winds, especially near Tilicho Base Camp and the lake area. Clear skies are common in autumn and spring, offering the best trekking conditions.

In winter, the region becomes extremely cold with heavy snow, often blocking the trail, while the monsoon season (June–August) brings clouds, rain, and slippery paths. Sudden weather changes are normal in high Himalayas, so proper layered clothing and preparation are essential for safety and comfort.
