Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Introduction: Overview
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a short, easy trek in the scenic Annapurna region of western Nepal. Trekkers usually start the journey from Kathmandu, traveling either by a 25–30-minute flight or a 6–8-hour scenic drive to Pokhara, a picturesque lakeside city and the gateway to the trek. From Pokhara, the trek officially begins at Nayapul, a small settlement at the base of the hills. For those coming from Pokhara, the drive to Nayapul takes around 1–1.5 hours, passing through rivers, farmland, and small villages, offering a glimpse of rural life in Nepal.
From Nayapul, the trail follows the stream and winds through lush farmland and charming villages. Trekkers pass through Birethanti and walk alongside small streams and terraces. About three hours’ walk from Nayapul and Birethanti, you reach Hille, a quiet village where the trek begins to climb more steeply. The trail from Hille to Tikhedhunga is a steep ascent, taking around two hours as you climb thousands of stone steps to reach Ulleri. The first night is spent in Ulleri, where trekkers are already greeted with views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli, creating a breathtaking mountain backdrop.
The next morning, after enjoying a fresh breakfast in Ulleri, the trek continues along a gradual trail to Banthanti, passing a few scattered houses and cultivated farmland. From Banthanti, the trail leads through a dense Rhododendron forest, passing Nangethati, and continues for about two hours of uphill walking through the forest to reach Ghorepani (2,820 m). Ghorepani is a small settlement with cozy tea houses and panoramic mountain views, and it serves as the base for the early morning hike to Poon Hill.
At 4:30 a.m., trekkers make the short but steep climb to Poon Hill (3,210 m) to witness a spectacular sunrise over more than a dozen snow-capped peaks, including Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), the seventh-highest mountain in the world. After enjoying the sunrise and capturing unforgettable photos, trekkers return to Ghorepani for breakfast before descending towards Tadapani. The first hour of the descent from Ghorepani to Tadapani involves a steep climb similar in height to Poon Hill, followed by a gradual 30-minute descent to Deurali. From Deurali, the trail descends further through the forest to Banthanti (2,600 m), where lunch can be enjoyed at one of the local tea houses. The trek then continues with a short walk along a stream, crossing a river, and a final 50-minute climb to reach Tadapani. From Tadapani, trekkers enjoy up-close views of peaks such as Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Fishtail (Machapuchare), Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Lamjung Himal.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular treks in Nepal, suitable for students, families, solo travelers, and budget trekkers alike. With a maximum altitude of just over 3,200 meters, altitude sickness is rarely an issue, making it ideal for first-time trekkers. Along the route, tea houses provide fresh food, private rooms, and even hot showers, ensuring comfort throughout the journey. Whether you have 3 days or a full week, the Poon Hill trek can be customized to fit your schedule while offering stunning mountain vistas, cultural experiences, and a memorable Himalayan adventure.
