Road to Chitwan from Kathmandu – How to Reach

Traveling from Kathmandu to Chitwan (Sauraha) is a scenic journey. The road to Chitwan from Kathmandu passes through green hills, rivers, and traditional villages.

  • Private Vehicle (Car/Jeep): A private vehicle offers comfort, flexibility, and privacy. It is a great option for families or small groups.
  • Tourist Bus (Budget Option): This is the most popular option. Tourist buses depart daily from Kathmandu and are clean, affordable, and safe.
  • Local Bus (Cheapest): Local buses are more affordable but slower. They provide a more local travel experience.
  • Kathmandu to Bharatpur Flight: For faster travel, you can fly to Bharatpur, which is the nearest airport to Chitwan. The flight takes about 25 minutes.

No matter which mode of transport you choose, the Kathmandu to Chitwan transport and return journey is full of scenic beauty and countryside views.

Weather and Best Time to Visit Chitwan

Chitwan National Park lies in the lowland Terai region of Nepal and experiences a tropical monsoon climate. The weather here changes significantly throughout the year, which directly affects jungle safari experiences. Knowing the seasonal conditions will help you choose the best time for your Chitwan Jungle Safari Budget Tour.

The best time to visit Chitwan is from October to March. During these months, the temperature ranges between 10°C to 25°C, and the weather is dry and pleasant. This is the most popular time for tourists as wildlife is easier to spot, especially around rivers and open grasslands. Jungle walks, elephant safaris, canoe rides, and jeep tours are more enjoyable and comfortable in this season. If you’re planning a Chitwan tour from Kathmandu, this is the ideal period to go.

From April to May, the weather gets much hotter, with temperatures climbing up to 35°C. While it can be hot and humid during the day, this period also sees fewer crowds. For those who don’t mind the heat, it’s still a good time to enjoy the jungle and take advantage of lower prices and more availability in hotels and safari bookings.

The monsoon season lasts from June to September, bringing heavy rainfall and high humidity. Trails inside the national park can become muddy and slippery, and some safari routes may even close temporarily due to flooding. Although the landscape turns lush and green during this time, it’s not the best for safari activities. Therefore, most travelers avoid this season when booking their Chitwan budget tour.

👉 Travel Tip: For the best combination of weather, wildlife activity, and smooth jungle exploration, plan your Chitwan Sauraha tour between October and March. This is when the park is most vibrant and accessible for safaris, bird watching, and cultural programs.

Photographing wildlife during a Chitwan jungle safari can be a thrilling and challenging experience for any photographer. Here are some photography tips to help you capture the best shots during your safari:

Use a telephoto lens: A telephoto lens will help you get up close to the wildlife without disturbing them.

Shoot in the morning and evening: The best light for wildlife photography is during the early morning and late evening when the light is softer and more dramatic.

Use a fast shutter speed: A fast shutter speed will help you freeze the motion of moving wildlife and produce sharp images.

Use a tripod: A tripod will help you stabilize your camera and avoid camera shake, especially when using a longer lens.

Use a low aperture: A low aperture (f/4 or lower) will create a shallow depth of field, isolating the subject from the background and producing a blurry background.

Be patient: Wildlife photography requires patience, so be prepared to wait for the right moment to capture the perfect shot.

Look for unique angles: Try shooting from different angles and perspectives to create unique and interesting compositions.

Be aware of the surroundings: Look for interesting elements in the surroundings, such as reflections, leading lines, or patterns that can add interest to your images.

Shoot in RAW format: Shooting in RAW format will give you more flexibility in post-processing and allow you to correct any exposure or color issues.

Respect the wildlife: Remember to always respect the wildlife and their natural habitat. Avoid disturbing them or getting too close, and follow the guidelines of your safari guide to ensure everyone’s safety.

Differences between elephant and jeep safaris in Chitwan

Chitwan National Park offers two main types of safaris: elephant and jeep safaris. Here are some differences between the two:

Mode of transportation: The biggest difference between elephant and jeep safaris is the mode of transportation. Elephant safaris are conducted on the back of domesticated elephants, while jeep safaris are conducted in four-wheel drive vehicles.

Height and angle: On an elephant safari, you will be seated on the back of a tall elephant, providing you with a higher and wider angle to view the wildlife. In contrast, a jeep safari offers a lower angle and a more direct view of the wildlife.

Group size: Elephant safaris typically have smaller group sizes, with usually only two to four people per elephant. Jeep safaris, on the other hand, can accommodate larger groups, with up to ten people per jeep.

Duration: Elephant safaris usually last longer than jeep safaris, with an average of two to three hours per ride. Jeep safaris typically last around two hours.

Access: Elephant safaris can take you to areas of the park that are not accessible by jeep, such as dense forests and marshlands. Jeep safaris, on the other hand, are restricted to designated roads and trails.

Cost: Elephant safaris are generally more expensive than jeep safaris due to the cost of maintaining and training the elephants.

Both types of safaris offer unique experiences and advantages, and the choice between them often depends on personal preference, budget, and the type of wildlife you hope to see.
