The tour begins with a picturesque 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Bhairawa Airport, followed by a short drive to Lumbini. The highlight of the tour is the Maya Devi Temple, which is considered the traditional site of the Buddha’s birth. The temple stands on the foundation of previous temples and stupas, including the one built by Ashoka. The tour also includes a drive past Chitwan Sauraha, a popular destination for elephant safari in Nepal.
The modern temple comprises a simple white structure that protects ancient relics, with the exact spot of the Buddha’s birth identified. The delicate sandstone figures found here are now displayed in the National Museum in Kathmandu. Visitors can also see the sacred pool, where it is said that Maya Devi bathed before giving birth and where the infant Buddha was washed by two mythical serpents.
The Maya Devi Temple is surrounded by the brick foundations of old temples and monasteries. All around Lumbini, long lines of colorful prayer flags are hung between trees. They carry prayers and mantras heavenward as they flutter in the breeze. Visitors can also see Ashoka’s Pillar, near the temple, which is surrounded by a small fence decorated with prayer flags and banners from the faithful. There are also bowls for incense sticks and space to sit and contemplate in front of the pillar.
History of Lumbini:
Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Lord Buddha. According to ancient texts, Queen Maya Devi of the Shakya kingdom gave birth to Prince Siddhartha Gautama at Lumbini while on a journey to her homeland. The Prince later attained enlightenment and became known as the Buddha. Emperor Ashoka visited Lumbini in the 3rd century BCE and erected a pillar to mark the site of the Buddha’s birth. Lumbini was later rediscovered in 1895 and has since been developed as a pilgrimage site for Buddhists and a center for the study of Buddhism. Today, it is home to various monasteries and temples, including the sacred pond where the Buddha is said to have taken his first bath.
