The Rara Lake Trek is a challenging but rewarding experience that takes you through some of the most beautiful and remote regions of western Nepal. The trek also takes you through the Rara National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a wide variety of wildlife, including musk deer, Himalayan black bear, leopard, and Himalayan goral. The trek is also an opportunity to witness the traditional way of life of the local communities who call this remote region home. With a duration of 8 days, the trek requires a good level of physical fitness, and the best time to trek is in the months of September to November and March to May.

Best time to visit Rara lake:

The best time to visit the Rara Lake trek is from September to November and March to May. The monsoon season from June to August is not recommended as the trails can be slippery and the views are not clear. September and October are considered the peak season as the weather is clear and the rhododendron forests are in full bloom.

March and April are also good times to visit as the temperature is warmer and the weather is stable. Keep in mind that the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable and it’s always a good idea to be prepared for any eventuality.

Required Permit for Rara Lake Trek:

The Rara Lake Trek requires a TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card and a permit to enter the Rara National Park. The TIMS card can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board or authorized trekking agencies in Kathmandu, and it is necessary for all trekkers entering the restricted areas of Nepal.

The permit for the Rara National Park can be obtained from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu or from the park entrance in Jumla. The permit fee for the park is currently around $30 for foreigners and around $20 for SAARC nationals. Additionally, some trekkers may also need to obtain a special permit to enter the conservation area depending on the route they choose.

It’s recommended to check with a local trekking agency or with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation for the most up-to-date information on permit requirements.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

  • Upon arrival at the Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel.
  • In the evening, you will have a short briefing about the trek and can also explore the local streets of Kathmandu.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu

  • After breakfast, we will take you for a full-day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), and Kathmandu Durbar Square.
  • Return to the hotel in the evening and prepare for the trek.

Day 3: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and Jumla

  • Take an early morning flight to Nepalgunj, a small city in the western part of Nepal.
  • From Nepalgunj, take another flight to Jumla, the starting point of the trek.
  • Overnight stay in Jumla.

Day 4: Jumla to Chere Chaur (3,055m)

  • After breakfast, begin the trek following the Jugad Khola river.
  • Pass through the small towns of Khalanga Bazaar and Chere Chaur, where you will get to see the rural life of western Nepal.
  • Overnight stay in Chere Chaur.

Day 5: Chere Chaur to Chala Chaur (2,980m)

  • Today’s trek starts with a gradual ascent to Jaljala Pass (3,580m) and continues to Jaljala Chaur.
  • After passing through Jaljala Chaur, the trail enters the Rara National Park and leads to Chala Chaur.
  • Overnight stay in Chala Chaur.

Day 6: Chala Chaur to Sinja Valley (2,490m)

  • Start the trek early and pass through beautiful forests and small villages.
  • After reaching Sinja Valley, visit the Sinja palace and temple, which are historically significant.
  • Overnight stay in Sinja Valley.

Day 7: Sinja Valley to Rara Lake (2,990m)

  • Today’s trek is the highlight of the journey as you reach the stunning Rara Lake, the highest lake in Nepal.
  • Enjoy the beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
  • Overnight stay near Rara Lake.

Day 8: Rara Lake to Jumla and Flight to Kathmandu

  • Start the day by retracing your steps back to Jumla.
  • From Jumla, take a flight back to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu.
  • Transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu and enjoy your final night in Nepal.
